It’s as important as ever for PWC owners to get involved with defending your freedom to ride. Getting involved is essential. Here are five easy ways you can help:

1. Monitor your local news media for PWC issues and let us know if you hear about a local PWC issue proposed in your community. In addition to being advocates, you can help be our eyes and ears around the country. You can contact AWA at www.awahq.org.

2. Write letters to the Editor of your local newspaper defending access. The AWA can help you with this. Letters to the Editor are an effective way to have your voice heard in the local media and to set the record straight about PWCs and PWC owners. Here is a link to facts about PWC use that can inform your letter, so that our people are always the one with the facts.

3. Vote! And, encourage other PWC owners to do the same. If you are not sure about a candidate’s position on PWC issues, contact them to find out or contact AWA and we can help. If you need help registering to vote, log onto www.awahq.org, then click on “grassroots activism” then “elections & candidates.” Choose your state and get registered today.

4. Operate your PWC safely. More than any other factor—your behavior out on the water can help improve the image of our community. Statistics show that the average PWC buyer is 40 years old, married and has a family. We know riders are regular folks, but government officials do not always know that!

5. Join AWA! This may be the easiest of all: www.awahq.org or call 800-913-2921(AWA1).

All of these steps are simple. But, the most important message is: please get involved, and have your voice heard in the political process.

The Return of Bluewater Network
posted by Chris Manthos

We’ve been warning PWC riders not to discount our San Francisco based pals, Bluewater Network, and their desire to turn back the clocks on access. Well, they’re back and coming out swinging; Last week, they filed a suit to repeal hard won personal watercraft access at Gulf Islands National Seashore in Florida, and Picture Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan.

Using the same old worn out propaganda mumbo jumbo from early 1990’s, they claim the National Park Service failed to conduct the rather extensive environmental impact statements in the correct manner: Translation: “The science and facts didn’t go our way, so we want it done again.” Real nice, eh, but then again, these people aren’t real big on integrity, or letting others decide for themselves the way they choose to live.

We expect there to be a hearing soon. Count on us to keep you up to date on this.

AWA, working with our members and friends are ready for the frivolousness of all this. Stand by for more in the coming weeks and months.

What can you do right now?

Sign up for AWA Alerts on the Web. The more quickly we can contact you with solid and timely information, the better. It’s Free, and you never get junk mail from us. http://www.AWAHQ.org click on “contact us” at the bottom of the page, and provide your address.

Inform your fellow PWC riders: The more people who know about this phony attack on their riding freedoms, the better. Information is power.

Join the AWA. There is no other organization defending your Freedom to Ride. The more members we have, the larger we are, and suddenly the wing dings will start looking else where for someone to complain about.

When PWC Riders stand together as one, we win. When we don’t, free and equal access disappears.

Your U.S. Senator needs to hear from you!
posted by Chris Manthos

Legislative Fix In for Federal Boating Permit Debacle.
With six months to go, Congress has finally acted on the issue surrounding “federal boating permits.” Senate Environment and Public Works Chair Barbara Boxer and Senator Bill Nelson have introduced S. 2766, the Clean Boating Act of 2008, which will fully and permanently restore the longstanding regulatory exemption for recreational boats and recreational boats used for charter fishing expeditions from any federal or state permitting under the Clean Water Act.

From previous AWA alerts, you already know environmental extremists convinced a San Francisco judge to eliminate the EPA’s 30 year old common sense exemption for recreational boating.

Without this new protection in place, the EPA will be forced to implement a “Federal Boating Permit” system where you will be forced to purchase “permission” to do exactly what you do right now; boating.

This isn’t a “maybe” “might” or a “could.” Instead, this will happen unless congress passes this important pro-people legislation.

Every boater needs to contact their Senator today and strongly urge them to support this common sense measure. For an easy and free way to contact your Senator please click on the following link: www.boatblue.org

Make the call, and stand with us as we preserve and expand boating access to America’s public waterways.

For more information, contact the AWA at 800-913-AWA1.
